UH OHHHH! How did I ruin a relationship when someone said Thank you?

FIRST WAY TO RESPOND TO THANKS: So its a regular work day and the next salesperson came into my office wanting to sell something. So he comes in and he tells me where he works which happens to be all the way across town. Im baffled...wow that is a long way to come see me. He said..oh nooo its not a big deal, I live out this way and I was just passing by.

Hmmmmmmmm. Well, lets contrast that with a different situation.

ALTERNATIVE WAY TO RESPOND TO THANKS: I was 300 miles away from home and my work on a little business trip. I was planning on coming back to Salt Lake Tuesday evening. A client called me and wanted to meet that night at 6pm. I wasnt going to be back till 9pm. So I said to her...okay, Im in St George but I will leave a little early to come see you guys at 6pm. I will see you this evening. I showed up at 6pm and went through the entire appointment. When I was leaving the appointment she said. Hey thank you soo much....you didnt come all the way back early just for us did you? (My first thought was to be humble and say...ohhh no...its no problem...I do it for everybody or I had to come back early anyway. But I resisted and moved onto saying....) You bet I did. She blushed. She blushed and said Ohhh you shouldnt have. I insisted..that is what we do for each other. I left her house. Within a couple of days, she had told all her neighbors about her experience with me and how I did things just for them. They felt special. She became a raving fan. In the 1rst situation previously above...I didnt feel special. Why didnt the sales rep tell me he came all the way out here just to see me? It was the truth....it was a moment he could capitalize of the relationship...and he retreated.

How do you respond when people tell you thank you? Do you say no problem. Do you say dont worry about it? Do you just nod your head and say thank you back? Its a moment of power...a moment to capitalize off the situation. What are you going to say,,,,the next time someone says thank you?

P.S. Thank you for your comments. (Lets see how you respond to that. :)
